Well here we are in sunny, wonderful Wellington. Freezone have arrived en masse to the windy city and all have enjoyed a lovely first day of roaming the city and taking in the beautiful scenery and city of New Zealand’s capital. The harbour of Wellington is a pleasurable site to behold as you meander past water pools and boardwalks in sunshine, perusing fruit markets and sampling local produce and enjoying the ample cafe culture with its reputation for good coffee and local cultural heritage.
Our campaign here is off to a wonderful start before we even knew it. After landing at 11:30 on Sat evening, our very own Matt Park couldn’t wait to get involved and took off for the 5km road race as a first hit out! Matt was just going to ‘run it’ and ended up taking GOLD as he lead from start to finish – “I kept on looking behind me to check where the other runners were and kept wondering ‘am I going the right way’, until I saw the officials clapping me on”. Congratulations Matt and we hope that it will be a good omen for our volleyballers as they begin their Outgames Campaign.
After a brief hit out at the Sacred Heart College, kindly organised by Mr Julias, we have worked through the cobwebs of the flights and also welcomed an honorary Freezoner, Donnelly Edmond, an import from Costa Rica (via America and most recently China) to the fold. Whilst some of us were sensible and returned home to cook meals and be demure, some of us hit the Pool Party bedecked in speedos, shorts, and little clothing. Making quite a splash amongst some of the locals and sports crew that are in town for the Games.
As I write this, I am looking out over the city as it begins to wake up – I THINK? Its pitch black here and 06:30 in the morning so I am hoping that I don’t have the time difference wrong and haven’t woken up at 0400! We begin this morning at 0800 with our umpires meeting and are looking forward to having a wonderful, friendly, exciting competition and Games experience.
Good Luck SS Awesome and SS Pandas as well as individuals playing under other team banners! Here’s to a great tournament!
Keep your eyes peeled for photos and results!
